Biography
Awat Yakub Othman was born on 1st of July 1964 in Erbil. In 1988 she graduated from the faculty of Statistics with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration and Economics at the Al-Mustansierya-University in Bagdad. After her migration to Germany in May 1995 she visited several German courses and later started a new study in Sociology Science, Linguistics & Academic at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn. With the topic „Globalization of society and the military conflicts in the Arab world” she graduated with a master’s degree in 2007 and decided to continue with a PhD in political Sociology. During her PhD which she started in 2007 and finished in 2012 she gained lots of experience in teaching languages such as German and Kurdish. Furthermore she was involved in teaching several modules such as “Women and the perception of women in the Orient” or “The political development of Iraq in the 20th century”. Also part of her PhD program was to voluntarly study at the Bonn International Graduate School Oriental and Asian Studies. Not to forget is the studies “German as foreign and second language” that she started in 2008 and finished successfully in 2009. The recording conditions for starting the DaF studies were to have the master`s degree. Graduating with a PhD degree in January 2012.
She decided to go back to her hometown Erbil in June 2013 where she was offered the Head of the German Department at the Salahaddin University Erbil. During this time she has not only been responsible for managing the department, but also for teaching different subjects at all stages. Moreover she trained and gained a license for becoming examiner for German as foreign Language. Since the beginning of this year (2018) she has been officially allowed to examine students in all around the world from the level A1 to C1. In addition to this she is doing her “Grünes Diplom” since April 2017. With the Grünes Diplom, she will acquire knowledge of the fundamentals of modern foreign language instruction. She will be inspired to learn more about topics related to language teaching, methodology, and didactics, and will become familiar with the quality standards of the Goethe-Institut.
